"Shattered
Expectations"
Photoshop 5.0
September 1998
Shattered Expectations is an exploration of surprise. When a contemplative state of mind
is interrupted by an incident there are various effects that hit the brain. The Thought at
hand is immediately lost and gradually the entire meditative state is lost like cracks on
a windshield or ripples on a pond. Suck interruption is not necessarily harkening a
negative incident or a positive one but the effects are the same in either case.
"The Whirl"
Photoshop 4.0
May 1998
The whirl is a fanciful exploration of the abilities of Photoshop. This piece utilized a
number of filters including the polar coordinates conversion, the ocean ripple and some
other effects. The colors were manipulated using the image adjust commands and then I used
lighting effects and several channels to create the depth.
"Techno Garden"
Photoshop 4.0
May 1998
Once again techno music comes as inspiration for a new work. This is the garden of the
mind. Hundreds of ideas crashing together in perfect sync to create a beautiful thought of
its own. Each piece fits in and blends with the neighboring pieces blurring the boundaries
and overlapping in brilliant colors.
"Pear Study"
Photoshop 4.0
March 1998
I found a great picture of red pears lined up at a market some where and I was taken with
the great red color of the pears. This work turned out to be an exploration in combining
graphic design and art. The focus is the pears and I used the background colors and
texture to bring the pears and the color of the pears to the focus of the composition.
"Channels"
Photoshop 4.0
March 1998
Landscape drama. This piece is an experimentation in ray-tracing and dramatic lighting.
The idea was to create a cold harsh feeling solely by the use of lighting on a landscape.
This could be a view from a wind sculpted planet with little atmosphere to block the harsh
sunlight or it could be a patch of wet mud with water channels carved deep into the
surface. Personally I think that it is melted chocolate and the feeling describes my
recent trials with a certain melted chocolate bar.
"Rose Window"
Photoshop 4.0
March 1998
The rose window is the child of an inspiring look as the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. I
was doing some research for my architecture classes and I stumbled across a book on
religious architecture and the first picture inside the cover was the glorious Rose Window
in the cathedral. My intention was to capture the dramatic effect that the window creates
in a dark stone monument.
"Gaia, Shimmering Chaos"
Photoshop 4.0
October 1997
Gaia, earth as a living organism. Constantly changing and moving and living. The wonder of
such a system is amazing; there is order in the chaos. The pattern that underlies all of
the apparent chaos leads one to believe that there is a guiding force in the world or at
the very least a system of rules and patterns that is of itself amazing. The world is
depicted here with an underlying pattern that pervades the whole and provides structure to
the randomness.
"Virtual Minarets"
Bryce 2.0
September 1997
Virtual Minarets is inspired by a backpacking trip that i took up to the Minarets with my
father. The grand views and jagged peaks were my model. I was trying to capture the awe
inspiring vistas of several ranges of mountains layered back into space. The connection
with the natural world is an experience that is common to all humans but the experience of
such breath-taking beauty is not available to all, so I wanted to bring this experience to
everyone.
"Worm Hole"
Photoshop 4.0
August 1997
May years of science fiction have taken their toll on my mind. As with every other digital
artist I had to take a crack at creating a worm hole/time warp effect. As this was my
first venture into the world of animation I decided to use the .gif as a means to drive
the animation. As a result the file is around 100k which is much too large for standard
web graphics but if you have high bandwidth take a look.
