"Life Engine"

Life EnginePhotoshop 5.0
October 1998

The sun is the driving force in our world; from it issues all energy to be used on our planet. In essence all life issues forth from the sun, riding on sun beams and rays of light. It shapes our lives through time by grant healing or sickness and by driving the weather with fierce power initiating both feast and famine. The sun is the engine of existence and the manufactory of life. The doves are flying out of the sun surrounded by rays of turbine which represents the rays of the sun and the sun's incredible force for creation and change.

"Take Heed"

Take heed of the fiery warning from beyond the dreams. I was looking through my stock photography and came upon an image of a bull skull; later that night I had a dream, similar to this, of the skull coming out of a burning vortex. I am not sure how to interpret this yet but I must have done something bad or my conscience is reacting to the bull fight that I saw in Madrid.

"Language"

Language can be a unifying element that ties civilizations and disparate cultures together yet it can also be the basis for ostracism. A stranger is a stranger because he does not speak the language. The language can be a body language or a cultural language; even a visual language can be a basis for communication and prejudice. A person with no language is stranded on a little boat with their own little thoughts in a sea of knowledge.

"Time Passing"

Time PassingPhotoshop 5.0
August 1998

My recent travels in Europe gave me with a warped sense of reality while on the road. Time seems to have no meaning because in remembering what I had recently seen made it seem that time way flying past giving artificial age to my memories because of the huge quantity of notable events crammed with in a small period of time. Despite the rapid pace of life the day that I would go home to see my Love, seemed to be in the far distant future. Time is quite relative and traveling brings this blurring of a logical time-line into a concept that can be pondered but not fully comprehended.

"Power Flow"

Power and energy are the source of all of our "civilization" and technological advancement. Energy can take many forms, electricity, heat, and motion. Generation, distribution, and usage to create other products thus utilized as embodied energy should get some attention in the role of our developing society. Awareness of renewable resources of power like the wind are critical in creating and maintaining a society that will out last our rapidly diminishing non-renewable energy supplies.

"Haiku Dances"

Haiku is the equivalent of dancing with words. Like a delicate Japanese woman dancing the Haiku is a form of expression that is at once eloquent and beautiful yet hints at meaning far deeper than what is discerned at first glance.

"Colorless Faces"

Ending racism calls for color blindness with respect to a person's skin yet we should indeed recognize color for it is what helps define our heritage. So many beautiful colors should be celebrated, especially in a digital age when the true colors can easily be hidden or changed. Can you guess the race? Does it matter? How can it be embraced if it is hidden?

"Plague of Knowledge"

The development of nuclear weapons in India adds a great deal of strain in the south of Asia which has the potential to break the balance of power in the world. Through India's new knowledge they have the power to create great deals of energy for their country yet with this comes the power to destroy. Is expanding knowledge good or is it opening a "Pandora's Box" for the evils of human nature to escape?

"Pollution Hell"

 Pollution HellPhotoshop 4.0
February 1998

This work is a re-visitation of my earlier work entitled "Destruction Reconstruction." I felt that this piece was less successful than I had hoped so I went back and reanalyzed what I liked and what I didn't like about the composition. The part that really struck me was the powerful imagery of the pollution of the seas. I took that part and reworked it a bit to come to a new meaning for the piece. It is a statement about how we are only killing ourselves as a species when we allow pollutants to reach the sea. It brings death to the bio-mass of the sea and it destroys our source of life: clean fresh water.

"t e c h NO f u t u r e"

Inspiration was derived from a piece of techno music that began with an old speech about was and death. It then moved into modern technological oblivion. Themes presented; the passage of time, a bleak future if based on our current beliefs concerning war and death, and still there is hope. The mood was bleak and oppressive, as the music continued to flow through time it became hopeful towards the end. I was successful in capturing these themes without limiting myself to war and death. My version is more universal as it can be applied to anyone who is living the harsh reality. Work life, love life and many other aspects of life can be equated with war. As a result of these substitutions the themes of"future bleakness with only hope to go on" becomes a very rich and deep subject.

"Season's Voyage"

 SeasonPhotoshop 4.0
November 1997

Often the change of seasons from fall to winter is seen as a time of death and decay for the life on the planet but it seems to me that this is a seasonal change that describes a cleansing of the soul and a renewal before the coming burst of spring. I have portrayed this with event with light and joy for the upcoming life. The essential parts in this composition are the time line/voyage and the cleansing or renewal. The ship describes the flow of time as one season changes into another. The wolf is beckoning the coming change and the fresh start.

"Holy Body"

Reworked Sept. 1998

In previous compositions there was a real strong and heavy feeling so I wanted to explore a more ephemeral feeling that gave a sense of drifting in and out. Bread is the body of Christ and thus a holy sacrament, however, I would say that bread is holy not because a religious leader said so, but because the bounty of nature which is potentially God's gift. This one extols the virtue of nature in its ability to restore the earth to a healthy state of existence while providing for the all terrestrial creatures.

"Creation of Man"

 CreationPhotoshop 4.0
October 1997

Man, or more correctly humankind, is an amazing creation that either through evolution or creation has become a divine entity. The light of the human mind and the materials that come together to form such a wondrous being must have required incredible forces to combine and great inspiration. This work is not about mankind, it is about the creation of man; the tools required, the materials needed, and the inspiration and skill that shaped us as a species. Whether this is the work of evolution or the divine is a matter of personal opinion but either way the result is astounding.

"Escape of the Mind"

 EscapePhotoshop 4.0
October 1997

The intention here was an escape from the harsh reality of life and work, a daydream if you will. "Dreaming about relief from oppression." I was really creating a picture dealing with how I have been feeling lately and it seems that there is an opportunity for release from this confusion that has been hounding me recently through an intellectual effort. It seems to me that it must be wonderful and beautiful when the realization happens but to get there I have to drudge through the oppressive labor and anguish to arrive at an understanding.
