An interview with Anindita

* As winner of First Prize in the Mixed category in the 2000 International Art Contest, being selected by such a diverse group of artists from all around the world, how do you feel?
This was the first time I took part in a contest. Getting an international award is always a matter of pride. But getting it as my first award is a knock out. It really helped me to believe in myself!
* Please describe your current works and any plans for forthcoming exhibits.
Currently I'm planning to work more on "Women and Veil". It's a vast subject and I have scraped the surface only. I'm planning to interact more with women in India and the Middle East to explore the subject more. I'm not satisfied with what I've expressed so far. I always hear their echo in my mind.
* If any, in what ways have you seen changes in attitudes towards "art"?
Art has become more versatile. Every day people are working in new media.
* Do you think that the fine artist will survive as technology replaces our skills?
Technology will only enrich the Fine Arts. Technology is not against Fine Arts or vice versa. As long as there will be humanity there will be Fine Arts. Fine Art is not about skills. It's about expression!
* What advice could you give to those embarking upon a career as an artist?
Feel it by heart and try to express it as you feel.
* Why did you enter the Art Dept contest and what decided your selection for entry?
I was planning to apply to some contest and the Art Dept contest seems to be the perfect match for me. It's international and open to all viewers over the world. That's just what I wanted. An exhibition in a local gallery only serves the local people. But I wanted to reach to the viewers all over the world through my work!
* Would you sell your most favourite artwork, or keep it?
I don't want to hang around my old work as they distract me from creating something new.
* How important was education and training to you?
One certainly needs guidance in early stages and education makes it easier. Training is a must to master different media. The best thing is if one can have education in different countries that enrich your perspective about art!
* Is there anything in your art career that you would have changed?
I'd like to start my formal art education earlier. I took admission in BFA when I was 22. I wish it was 4 years earlier.
* If you were invited overseas to exhibit your works, where would you like that to be?
The countries I never have been France, Australia and New Zealand.
* Are you looking forward to entering the contest for next year?
Will depend on how much time I get this year to work.
* Do you recommend use of the Internet for an artist's publicity?
Sure, Internet is the tool for the next generation and the artist should learn to use it.
* Would you change anything about how the contest is organised?
I'd like to see more pictures for 3-D works. Picture from a single angle is not always enough for a 3-D work.
Thank you
